Halo: Campaign Evolved brings Master Chief’s first mission to PS5 with impressive visuals, modern combat, and new content.

Back in 2001, Halo: Combat Evolved instantly pulled me in, and it was the reason I bought an Xbox. I still remember stepping onto Alpha Halo, looking up at the ring stretching across the sky, and realizing I was playing something special. Master Chief became one of my favourite characters, and Combat Evolved helped define console shooters. That history makes Halo: Campaign Evolved seem surreal arriving on the PlayStation platform. Seeing an Xbox icon beside a PlayStation logo is shocking, but it opens the Halo universe to a whole new audience.

Halo Studios has rolled out the red carpet to new and returning players by rebuilding the campaign with modern visuals, audio, controls, and new missions. It is both a welcoming entry point and a rewarding return by all accounts. As a hardcore Halo fan, I approached this remake with enormous excitement, and equally high expectations. After fighting through the Covenant, exploring every rebuilt corner of the ring, and testing how this Xbox classic translates to PlayStation 5, I have plenty to say about what has changed, what remains timeless, and whether Campaign Evolved truly delivers the definitive version of Master Chief’s first adventure; let’s dive into my full review.

Returning to the Halo Ring

Halo: Campaign Evolved follows Master Chief and his AI companion Cortana after the UNSC Pillar of Autumn is attacked by the Covenant. Their last-ditch escape leads them to the mysterious ringworld known as Halo, where scattered human forces regroup while uncovering the installation’s deeper secrets. The story’s shift from military science fiction into mystery and horror remains one of its greatest strengths.

The brand-new cinematics improve motion capture and staging, also adding to the story at its most impactful moments. Cortana feels more present, Captain Keyes more authoritative, and the Covenant more intimidating. I liked how familiar scenes have more weight while preserving the sense that Chief has entered a place he does not understand. I’ll admit, some of the redesigned faces and newly delivered dialogue may require a slight adjustment, but the story is clearer, more cohesive and very engaging.

Operation: METEORITE Offers New Story Content

The largest addition to the story is the new Operation: METEORITE, a three-mission prequel featuring Master Chief and Sgt. Major Avery Johnson before the campaign. The pair boards a Covenant vessel, explores new environments, and encounters threats and allies that expand Halo’s opening chapter. I especially liked seeing Johnson receive more time in the spotlight.

He remains funny and charismatic, but the missions also demonstrate why he is such a capable soldier. His personality balances Chief’s direct approach and creates strong character moments. Operation: METEORITE also gives returning players something unfamiliar through new combat spaces, lore, and cinematics exploring Chief and Johnson’s partnership.

Halo: Campaign Evolved Gameplay

The heart of Halo remains its combat sandbox, and it’s better than ever. Stripping an Elite’s shields, finishing it with a precise shot, tossing a plasma grenade into a group of Grunts, and improvising with whatever survives still feels fantastic. Halo Studios modernizes aiming, movement, pacing, and navigation while retaining the physics and enemy behaviour that give Combat Evolved its personality.

Sprint and aim-down-sights make the game more approachable, while modifiers can be adjusted to match closer to the classic rule set. Weapons added later in the series like the Battle Rifle, Energy Sword, and Needle Rifle, now appear in the campaign. Vehicle hijacking and piloting a Wraith add tactical options, yet the famous pistol remains powerful enough to solve many of your alien-related problems.

Worthy Alien Foes

Enemy AI is still aggressive and entertaining. Elites dodge and pressure exposed positions, Grunts panic when leaders fall, and their funny dialogue made me laugh on more than one occasion. There is also improved wayfinding that helps repetitive sections, although a few corridors still linger a little longer than they should; overall, it’s an improvement that helps with pacing.

Skulls and Campaign Remix

Replayability is excellent thanks to 42 Skulls and Campaign Remix, which randomizes enemies, weapons, visibility effects, and other conditions. Solo play is strong, but two-player split-screen and four-player online co-op with cross-play deliver Halo’s best variety of chaos.

Halo: Campaign Evolved Graphics and Performance

Halo: Campaign Evolved looks excellent on PlayStation 5 Pro. Halo Studios uses Unreal Engine 5 for the presentation while retaining legacy gameplay systems beneath it, allowing the remake to look modern without losing classic Halo’s feel. Alpha Halo features denser vegetation, detailed terrain, atmospheric effects, and enormous Forerunner structures.

The Silent Cartographer is a highlight, with its shoreline, distant architecture, and large battles showcasing the improvements. Covenant ships glow with alien colour, snowy environments have greater depth, and darker areas become more unsettling through improved lighting.

Performance remained smooth playing solo, but I did experience a few frame stutters with 2-player couch co-op in two sections packed with enemies. Image quality is crisp across outdoor spaces, and PS5 Pro keeps distant enemies and structures easy to identify.

The DualSense adds welcome vibration and trigger resistance, giving weapons and vehicles distinct feedback without becoming distracting. Some environments look almost too polished compared with the original’s stark simplicity, but this is easily the most visually impressive version of Master Chief’s first campaign.

Halo: Campaign Evolved Audio and Sound Design

Halo’s audio has always been essential to its identity, and the remake treats it with the same care as the visuals. The remastered score preserves the Gregorian chants, percussion, electronic atmosphere, and orchestral themes that made the soundtrack iconic. Familiar music rises naturally during battles and exploration, creating the heroism, loneliness, and mystery I remember.

Weapons sound more powerful, plasma projectiles crackle, shields burst with a sharp electrical snap, and vehicles carry greater mechanical weight. Environmental audio sells the ring’s scale through distant combat, machinery, and silence. The newly recorded dialogue is cleaner and benefits from stronger direction, although I did notice changes, especially with Captain Keyes’ voice. Through a quality headset or surround system, Campaign Evolved creates an enormous soundscape supporting combat and storytelling.

Final Thoughts on Halo: Campaign Evolved

Halo: Campaign Evolved is an outstanding remake of one of gaming’s most important campaigns. It preserves the open-ended encounters, mysterious atmosphere, improvisation, and co-op fun that made Combat Evolved special while improving its rougher edges.

The absence of competitive multiplayer makes the package narrower than some Halo releases, and a little repetitive design remains beneath the polish. However, the campaign focus allows Halo Studios to give this classic the attention it deserves. For returning fans, it is an exhilarating homecoming. For PlayStation newcomers, it demonstrates why Master Chief became a defining gaming hero. I never expected to recommend buying Halo on PlayStation, but this remake makes that recommendation easy.
