Nintendo Direct Offers First Look at Super Mario Bros. Movie

Shigeru Miyamoto, Chris Pratt, and Jack Black shared the world premiere of the first Super Mario Movie trailer!

Nintendo fans were given a special treat during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, as the company offered up the first look at the trailer for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The film, which is being produced by Illumination Entertainment (the studio behind Despicable Me and Minions), looks like it’s shaping up to be a faithful adaptation of one of gaming’s most popular franchises.

Before fans got a first look at the trailer Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto introduced fellow production and talent partners on the project. Illumination's Chris Meledandri spoke about the long road to this moment working on the film. The movie has been in the pipeline for over 7 years, with everything leading up to this moment.

Miyamoto-san next introduced Chris Pratt (Mario) and Jack Black (Bowser) to speak about their roles as the voice talent for the film's two main characters. Pratt discussed what it meant to play the iconic role and bring his own energy and style to everyone's favourite Italian plumber. Black jokingly brought up how he learned to "breathe fire" to better capture the classic Nintendo villain Bowser.

First look at Super Mario Bros. Movie

After hearing from the talent, we were finally treated to the world premiere trailer for the upcoming film:

Overall, the trailer looks promising, and fans of Nintendo’s classic platformer should be excited for what’s to come. The animation and characters look spot-on, along with the music and sound effects.

I'm personally still not sold on Chris Pratt's voice work with the mustachioed plumber, but we only got a small sample of his work. It will be interesting to see how Illumination Entertainment handles one of gaming's most iconic universes on the silver screen.

The Super Mario Bros. movie is currently slated for release on April 7th, 2023 exclusively in theatres.
