NBA 2K24 Review

NBA 2K24 celebrates the silver jubilee of NBA 2K series with great gameplay and graphical upgrades, my full review.

The 2K series hits a big milestone this year, celebrating its 25th anniversary with NBA 2K24. This iconic series first graced CRT screens in 1999 on the Sega Dreamcast, setting new standards for basketball video games. Over the years, the NBA 2K series has consistently upped its game, growing its fanbase with each new edition. Today, it stands tall as one of the most influential sports games out there, featuring legendary basketball icons like Michael Jordan and Shaquille O’Neal on its covers.

This year, NBA 2K24 pays tribute to the late basketball legend Kobe Bryant, showcasing his legacy on the cover, and in the game. 2K24 introduces a special "Mamba Moments" mode, allowing players to relive some of Kobe's unforgettable performances. But that's not all - NBA 2K24 comes packed with new features like ProPLAY technology and an adrenaline boost system, with enhanced graphics and performance. Let's dive into the court and explore NBA 2K24 in detail.

NBA 2K24 Details

Platform(s): PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC Developer(s): Visual Concepts Publisher(s): 2K Sports Genre: Sports Modes: Single-player, multiplayer ESRB Rating: E for Everyone

Elevating Gameplay with NBA 2K24

NBA 2K24 brings exciting improvements to core gameplay. The standout feature is the ProPLAY technology, which uses real NBA footage to animate players realistically. This adds an authentic feel to the game, reducing graphical glitches and animation hitches from last year's version. Star players now showcase their signature moves, mirroring their real-life counterparts. But remember, ProPLAY is exclusive to PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC.

Smarter AI in NBA 2K24

NBA 2K24 also boasts improved player AI, making the game more challenging. The CPU adapts to your playstyle and tendencies, forcing you to be more strategic with your decisions. You'll face smarter, more aggressive opponents who'll exploit your weaknesses. For example, if you rely too much on pick and roll plays, the CPU will adjust its defense and trap you more often. The AI will recognize your hot and cold zones, and try to deny you shots from your favourite spots. Overall, it's a lot more of a dynamic experience playing against the CPU.

A Wealth of Content

NBA 2K24 offers a plethora of single-player and multiplayer modes. The prominent MyCAREER mode lets you create your player and guide them from prospect to NBA legend. You can also join the WNBA in the new W mode. Let's delve further into what is included:

MyTEAM and MyNBA Modes

MyTEAM returns with the ability to build your dream team of current and past NBA players. With the new Salary Cap Mode, you can test your skills and strategy on a budget. MyTEAM now supports crossplay, allowing you to compete with players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, some lag issues persist in online modes which really hamper the experience.

In MyNBA mode, you can manage every aspect of your team, from roster moves to finances. Experience different eras of NBA history, including the new LeBron Era. While the modes offer plenty of content, they could benefit from more creativity as they can become repetitive.

The microtransaction dilemma

A significant drawback of NBA 2K24 is its heavy reliance on microtransactions. The frequent push to purchase VC with real money can disrupt the gaming experience. These purchases are optional but become pretty much essential for competing online. Thus, some of the best moments in the game come from playing offline, enjoying the core experience.

Final Thoughts on NBA 2K24

As Visual Concepts commemorates the 25th anniversary of the NBA 2K series, 2K24 has risen to the occasion, bringing enhancements to its core gameplay. The addition of ProPLAY technology has added a new level of authenticity to the gameplay. With ultra-realistic animations, players move fluidly across the court, mimicking the finesse and athleticism of real-life basketball stars. The upgraded player AI in 2K24 has added a new layer of depth to the experience. From MyCAREER to MyNBA, NBA 2K24 offers hours of engaging gameplay. A notable addition is the support for crossplay, allowing "same gen" gamers to compete with players across different platforms. However, online modes still face occasional lag issues that can hamper the experience. Despite these setbacks, NBA 2K24 delivers a satisfying basketball experience.
