Xbox GoldenEye 007 Remaster Reveal Imminent?

The rumoured GoldenEye 007 remake appears ready for a full reveal and release with an unexpected leak.

Party like it's 1997 because it looks like the N64 classic is bound to make a modern day return! A recent Microsoft website achievement listing (which has since been removed) seems to suggest that an Xbox remaster of the much beloved shooter could be on the way. The achievement list showed up on the store late last week, and was quickly picked up by the eagle eyed @Wario64 and reported on by Video Games Chronicle here is the original tweet:

The game has both campaign and multiplayer achievements, which total 1000 gamer score.

While the listing has since been removed, it certainly got people talking. And with good reason too- GoldenEye 007 is widely considered to be one of the best shooters ever made. The title helped to put FPS split screen multiplayer on the map, and kicked off a home console shooting game revolution. It would make sense for Microsoft to want to bring it back for a new generation of gamers to enjoy.

What's a GoldenEye?

The N64 classic, is based on the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye starring Pierce Brosnan. It has a single-player campaign in which the player controls Secret Intelligence Service agent James Bond and uses him to prevent a criminal syndicate from launching a satellite weapon. The game also includes a multiplayer mode in which players can compete in split screen deathmatch scenarios.

You Only Live Twice

The existence of the GoldenEye remake stretches back to the Xbox 360 era, so this is the "second life" for the unconfirmed game. Rumour has it the remake was ready for release, but was held back due to a myriad of licensing issues from multiple stakeholders in the franchise. Now it looks like the complex web of litigious issues has been unfurled and a reveal and release is imminent. The existence of updated achievement art on Xbox servers makes it more of a possibility than ever:

Of course, nothing has been confirmed yet and we'll just have to wait and see if anything comes of this. But in the meantime, I can hope and dream that we'll be donning the tuxedo and picking up our Walther PPKs once again to save the world from evil master minds.
